A randomized controlled trial finds that people with type 2 diabetes lost more weight and improved long-term blood glucose levels (HbA1c) and lipid levels if they ate 3 meals/day compared to participants that 6 meals/day. Both diets had the same macronutrient composition and calories. All participants ate meals within the same time window.
People that ate the 3 meals a day consumed most of their carbohydrates and calories early in the day while the participants eating 6 small meal a day diet had carbohydrates and calories distributed throughout the day.
Eating 3 meals per day also changed the activity of genes that regulate circadian rhythm which also regulates various aspects of metabolism. Many studies have shown that food intake regulates metabolic clocks in peripheral organs like the liver. This study suggests that the frequency of meals may also affect these circadian genes.
